Before you can get your CDL for the first time, you must get a CDL instruction permit. This permit is good for six months and helps you prepare for driving with your actual CDL. Keep reading to find out what you need to do to get this instruction permit so you can begin your career in the trucking industry:

Provide Proof of Age, Health, and Residency

You have to be at least 21 to obtain your CDL instruction permit. It is illegal for drivers under 21 to transport hazardous materials. When you apply for the permit, you must submit a social security card and a valid operator license. You must also complete the Medical Examiner Certificate or have an ADOT card. You also have to submit documentation of a current physical exam from a licensed doctor.

Provide Proof of Driving Experience

You must also provide documentation that proves you have at least 1 year of driving experience in a vehicle that is not a motorcycle. If you have an Arizona driver’s license, the information will be available in the database. If you have a license from another state, you must have had the license for at least a year to qualify for the permit.

Complete the Knowledge Test

After you provide all of the documentation that you need, you have to pass the written test. Use the skills from your classes and the Commercial Driver License Manual to review the information you learned. You might also have to pay a small fee for your exam.
