A Commercial Driver’s License, or CDL, is necessary to handle any commercial vehicle in excess of  26,000 lbs or when transporting hazardous materials. Such vehicles include buses, tow trucks, and tractor trailers. If you are interested in obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License, attending a CDL school in Phoenix can help you prepare for your exam.

Commercial Learners Permit

Before you can obtain your Commercial Driver’s License, you’ll first need a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP). A Commercial Learners Permit allows you to handle trucks on the road for the purposes of practice as long as you are accompanied by an instructor that holds a currently valid CDL. Before you can obtain your CLP, your driving record over the past 10 years will be checked. Additionally, you will need to pass a Department of Transportation medical exam. This routine physical is meant to ensure you can operate a commercial vehicle safely without causing harm to your health or putting others around you at risk.

Successful CDL Skills Test

Once you have held your CLP for at least 14 days, you are eligible to take the CDL Skills Test. This test will check your skills in inspecting, handling, and maneuvering a truck. The skills test consists of three separate portions: the Vehicle Inspection Test, the Basic Controls Test, and the Road Test. It is highly recommended that you complete a CDL training course at a nationally-recognized truck driving school prior to taking the CDL skills test.

CDL Application Fee

In addition to completing a successful CDL Skills Test, you will also need to pay an application fee. The current CDL fees in Arizona are $25 for Class A and Class B Commercial Driver’s Licenses.
